International experts have identified Best Practices for
emotional stress and trauma, including evaluation and therapy
techniques. Unfortunately, many people working with children
and families do not know how and when to use them. PARTNERS
aims to train professionals and lay community members on how
to:
- identify children and families who have been through negative
events
- screen for the various mental health responses to negative
events
- find and make appropriate referrals
- read, critique, and conduct research on children and families
who have been through stress and trauma
Mental health professionals also are trained on the administration
of the aforementioned evaluation and therapy techniques.
PARTNERS leadership is dedicated to training mental health
professionals at every stage of their career. Through the
PARTNERS Externship, Clinical Supervision Classes offered by the
Department of Psychology, and PARTNERS Research Institute, we train
graduate students in clinical, counseling, and school psychology to
provide clinical services and conduct innovative research. We
also work with senior clinicians in various settings representing
the continuum-of-care. State-of-the-art technology is used to
further the training, including the internet, audio taping, and
videotaping.
PARTNERS’ training initiatives include didactic presentations and
ongoing consultation. To have a broader impact on the local
and national mental health system, PARTNERS is dedicated to a train
the trainer model, whereby participants are taught the
evidence-based techniques and then taught how to supervise their
own trainees in the techniques.
