Our Mission
To research and provide state-of-the-art evidence-based mental
health services to families and communities with children and
adolescents who have been through emotional stress and trauma, such
as family violence and disasters.
To train professionals on the design, evaluation, and provision of
such services.
PARTNERS fulfills this mission through creatively and sensitively
integrating scientific findings and real world practice. What
we learn is disseminated throughout Queens, New York State, and
beyond.
- PARTNERS stands for "Preventing Adverse Reactions to Negative
Events and Related Stress."
- PARTNERS is a unique multi-disciplinary clinical-research
program based in the Department of Psychology at St. John’s
University, that offers free, state-of-the-art mental health
services to underserved children and families in the surrounding
multicultural communities. Like St. Vincent de Paul who saw the
hardship in his community and devoted his life to its elimination,
PARTNERS’ mission is to bring relief to children, families, and
communities who have been through emotional stress and
trauma.
- PARTNERS was founded in 2001 by Executive Director Dr. Elissa
Brown, clinical psychologist, researcher professor of psychology at
St John’s University. Dr. Brown and the staff of PARTNERS are
dedicated to the interplay between providing evaluation and therapy
services, empirically testing these services, training
multi-disciplinary professionals and lay people to provide these
services, and adapting these services to the needs and values of
various communities and cultures.
- We serve traumatized, multi-cultural children, adolescents, and
young adults, and their families. We provide outreach,
assessment, psychotherapy, and case management services.
PARTNERS aims to provide these services in multiple languages, such
as Spanish, English, French, Creole, Hindi, Urdu, Mandarin, Chinese
and Hebrew.
- PARTNERS collaborates with community agencies that serve
traumatized children and families. Our community partnerships
include: Child Protective Services, Legal Aid, Queens Family Court,
Local Schools, and the Queens Child Advocacy Center. As a
member of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network, PARTNERS
also collaborates with national experts.
- As a member of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network, the
Association of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapy, and other
organizations, PARTNERS also collaborates with national and
international experts.
- PARTNERS has been funded by NIMH, SAMHSA, NYS-OMH and DOJ.
