Mieka Smart is a drug and alcohol epidemiologist via training awarded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). She earned her Doctor of Public Health credential at Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health in the Department of Mental Health. She serves as Assistant Professor and Associate Director for Public Health Practice in the St. John’s University Master of Public Health Program. She established the Public Health Interdisciplinary Epidemiology & Leadership Development (PHIELD) Workgroup at SJU.

Research Interests

Currently, the PHIELD Workgroup is active in three areas of public health: developing a mobile phone game/app for diabetes management, exploring salivary cortisol as a mental health biomarker, and both domestic and global alcohol policy evaluation.
