Barbera comes to St. John’s University as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Art and Design. He received his M.M. in Music Technology from Five Towns College in Dix Hills, NY. Since 2014, Barbera has been an adjunct at St. John’s in the Department of Art and Design as an Assistant Professor of Music. As a composer, he creates music that fuses a diverse variety of popular styles with classical tradition and form. His current work is on a progressive rock album, in which each musical piece’s traditional rock instrumentation (electric guitar, electric bass, electronic keyboard, and drum set) is accompanied and augmented by a large orchestration averaging 100 or more additional classical and virtual instruments. As a composer who also produces the music which he composes, it is always a challenge to attempt to appropriately order and blend the numerous widely diverging timbres that exist within his music. Lyrical themes of his work focus on the human condition and a comparison of one’s waking experiences in modern life to the various stages of a deepening dream.
