Abu Serajuddin, Ph.D, joined St. John’s University in September 2008 as Professor of Industrial Pharmacy after working for over three decades in the pharmaceutical industry in scientific and managerial positions. In his latest positions in the industry, Dr. Serajuddin served as the Director/Executive Director and the US Head of Drug Product Development (1999-2003) and Executive Director of Science, Technology and Outsourcing (2003-2008) for Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corp, East Hanover, New Jersey. Prior to joining Novartis, he worked for 12 years in Bristol-Myers Squibb and 10 years in Sanofi-Aventis (through mergers). In 2005, Novartis named him Novartis Leading Scientist, a top honor bestowed by the company, for extraordinary contribution to the development and growth of the company through scientific excellence. He received the Bristol-Myers Squibb President's Award for unprecedented 3 times (1996-1998) for his contribution and leadership in solving difficult issues in drug development. Dr. Serajuddin is internationally recognized for his contribution to pharmaceutical sciences, especially in (a) the development of drug delivery systems for poorly water-soluble drugs, (b) formulation design and development, and (c) pharmaceutical processing. He authored over 100 research papers, book chapters and patents, and made over 100 invited presentations in major scientific conferences. He received two of the highest awards given by the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS): AAPS Research Achievement Award for Formulation Design and Development (FDD) in 2010 and AAPS Research Achievement Award for Manufacturing Science and Engineering (MSE) in 2014. He attained Fellow status in American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS), American Pharmacists’ Association (APhA), International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), and American Association of Indian Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAiPS). He serves in the Editorial Advisory Boards of Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Journal of Excipients and Food Chemicals.

Research Interests

The primary focuses of Prof. Serajuddin’s research are the development of novel drug delivery systems, especially for poorly water-soluble drugs, and the innovation in processing technologies for solid dosage forms.
