As a missionary community, all five province participate in the
world-wide effort of Vincentians to serve those most in need. All
five provinces have priests and brothers who serve as missionaries
in South America, Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, and the Soviet
Union. They are responding in generosity and faith to the annual
appeal of our Superior General in Rome for missioners to staff new
missions. However, the Eastern and Midwest Provinces have
established provincial mission outreaches in the Republic of Panama
and the African nation of Kenya.
In the early 1900’s Vincentians of the Eastern Province went to
Panama to minister to workers who were building the Panama Canal.
After the Canal’s completion, Vincentians established a missionary
outreach to Panamanians in its cities and countryside. Today,
Vincentians serve in Panama City, Colon, Concepcion, Puerto
Armuelles, and Balboa. Of particular pride is the emergence of a
formation program of young Vincentian Panamanians, who now
constitute a majority of its members.
In 1980, the Midwest Province established a provincial mission
in Kenya for pastoral ministry to the people of Nairobi, and
founded a much-needed seminary for formation of priests. The
mission, now nearly a quarter century old is flourishing, with
native Kenyans in formation to serve the Church in Kenya as well as
to establish the next generation of Vincentians in Africa.
