Student Service Opportunities

MIDNIGHT RUN

Midnight Runs will return in September, 2013.

All Midnight Runs begin at 8 p.m. in the Gans Conference Room, Flynn Hall.

Midnight Run is a challenging experience where students have a hands-on encounter of the homeless of our city.  Runs are held every other week throughout the semester.  During a Run, students gather to make bagged meals for the night.  Then they distribute the meals, along with clothes and toiletries, to those in need in Manhattan.  Transportation is provided.  Seats are limited for each run. If you can’t participate in a run but want to help, you can always donate needed items.

For more information, contact Melissa Gibilaro at 718-390-4497 or gibilarm@stjohns.edu.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY

The St. Vincent de Paul Society is a student-run organization reaching out to the poor and those in need in New York City. Members are involved in volunteering in soup kitchens, residences for the elderly, working with disadvantaged children and many other activities. Their activities take place throughout the semester.

PLUNGES

Applications for the 2013 - 2014 calendar of Campus Ministry Plunges will be available herein September.

Community Service Weeks & Weekends

Travel to various places and help those in need. Fix a roof for a family who can’t afford to or build a ramp for a handicapped senior. Feed someone who is hungry; because it may be the only meal that person will get that day.  Put your faith and love into action by participating in a community service week offered to individuals or student groups during the January Break, Spring Break and in May at the beginning of Summer Break.  A few weekend plunges to Philadelphia will be offered throughout the year. Sites include: Philadelphia, New Orleans, Panama and other U.S. sites.

For more information, please contact James Behan at 718-390-4305 or behanj@stjohns.edu.

SOUP KITCHEN SERVICE

The Soup Kitchen service offered through Campus Ministry is a terrific opportunity for staff, faculty, administrators, and students to work side-by-side to help feed the poor.  Give some time to feed the hungry.

Soup Kitchen Service will return in September and take place every Wednesday from 10:00 am - 1:30 pm.  Please meet in Notre Dame House.

Campus Ministry will arrange for your transportation there and back, and we will join you for the trip. We leave from campus to the Stapleton UAME Church to prepare and serve at the soup line for lunch time. It is a memorable service experience.

If you, your department, your organization or lunch group are interested in reserving a spot please indicate two or three (2 or 3) dates in order of preference and call a Graduate Assistant at (718) 390-4292. We will accommodate each person’s preference to the best of our ability.

Note:
Please note that there is a 5 person maximum per day. If you have any questions, please contact a Graduate Assistant at 718-390-4292.

LITURGICAL MINISTRY

Campus Ministry welcomes Lectors, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and Altar Servers to serve at our daily and special campus-wide Masses. Training for new ministers, as well as a meeting of former ministers will take place at the beginning of each semester.  We also have on-going formation for updating in Church ministry.
