Join Us for the Fourth Annual St. Baldrick’s Foundation and Locks of Love Event

Mark your calendar now to join us on Thursday, March 14, 2013, as we gather to support the fourth annual St. Baldrick’s Foundation and Locks of Love event on the Queens and Staten Island campuses.

You’ll feel the energy and enthusiasm of our efforts to fight a terrible disease. Last year, 72 heads were shaved, 63 Locks of Love were donated and more than $33,800 was raised to find cures for childhood cancer.

"Participating in the St. Baldrick's and Locks of Love event allows me to actively support research to help find a cure and better treatment for childhood cancers,” said Rino Grzinic ’77SVC, Associate Director of Development at St. John’s and the only “shavee” who has participated every year since its inception on campus. “This event helps to raise awareness in a very demonstrative way."

Participants raise money for childhood cancer research, with 100 percent of the proceeds going directly to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. As part of the effort, those who raise funds shave their heads in solidarity with the children who suffer from this rampant disease. Also featured is a wonderful opportunity to participate in Locks of Love, a nonprofit organization that donates “locks” (hair 10 inches or longer) to make wigs for children suffering from hair-loss diseases.

"My grandfather was affected by cancer, and he lost all his hair,” said Maria Gonzalez, a ’12CPS, “I wanted to support him by participating in the Locks of Love effort. I was able to donate more than 12 inches of my hair.  It was amazing how this experience made me feel reconnected to him — it was a special tribute."
The day also will feature raffles, giveaways and key members of our University participating. Why not be one of them?

“To someone unsure of shaving their heads, I'd tell them, ‘By shaving your head, you're raising money for children undergoing a difficult illness,” said Brandon Lee Julian ’14CPS, a student at the Staten Island campus. “Shaving your head makes a statement and it's a wonderful cause. The more money that's raised, the closer we are to a cure, and the more people that do it, the more their friends will join in.”

Everyone can help achieve this year’s goal of $40,000 or more. To learn more, watch this informational video. Also contact the Office of Campus Ministry:
