As we celebrate Founder’s Week 2008,
we look to deepen our understanding of the Vincentian mission of
St. John’s. This year we celebrate the unity of humankind and our
interdependence in the world. During the week, we seek to examine
our responsibility to love - “extending our hearts and minds to
nurture our own and the other’s good.”
Library Exhibit: "Charity Embraces
Justice"
by the students of Professor Joseph Adolphe, Department of Fine
Arts, St. John's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Class:
Anatomy & Figure Drawing I. From a personal statement of
how, as an artist, each could contribute to a just and moral
society, the students extracted a single sentence. These sentences
are the basis for the visual images in the exhibit.
Excerpts
“As an artist, I should use the platform I have to send out a
message, either exposing immorality or highlighting justice where
it may appear.” -- Keri Dodge, Illustration
“I believe in simply helping others less fortunate or just
people in need for any reason. This could be as big as helping
entire societies in need, whether from a natural disaster or
economic standing, or as little as offering a helping hand to a
stranger during a normal day.” -- Brian Bumbarger, Fine Arts
“Start Small. As Individuals, contributions to a society will
seem to start off as a mere thought and through hard work,
dedication, persuasion and essentially time, the mere thought may
have a direct, positive effect on society.” -- Kara Montalbano,
Graphic Design
“I will take a stand…..be a voice for the voiceless.” -- Theresa
Flaherty, Illustration
“I should offer my skills, talents and time to society and the
immediate community through volunteer work.” -- Joe Botero, Graphic
Design
