Jubilee For GivingFounder's Week - January 24 - 29, 2000"Nothing is pleasing to God without charity, and hence we may
conclude that nothing pleases God so much as the avowal of our
faults and reconciliation with our neighbor" - St. Vincent de
Paul
The Jubilee year took place every 50 years in ancient
Israel. Its meaning and prescriptions are found primarily in
Chapter 25 of the Book of Leviticus. Its spirit was one of
repentance and forgiveness. For Christians, this special year we
celebrate 2000 years since the birth of Christ. The life of Jesus
embodies the compassion of God and sets relationships right within
the community. Pope John Paul II declared 2000 as “an
extraordinarily great Jubilee.“ He encouraged all people to
enter the new millennium in a spirit of renewal and
forgiveness.
As the St. John’s Community celebrates this great year, the
Founder’s Week theme examines the beneficial role that forgiveness
plays in our world, from our economic, to social, to personal
lives. By understanding and promoting
reconciliation-forgiveness, and compassion-giving of ourselves, we
follow the example of St. Vincent de Paul.
