On September 24, 2005, members of the St. John’s family came
together for the Fourth Annual University Service Day in
celebration of the feast of St. Vincent de Paul. The St. John’s
community – students, faculty, administrators, staff and alumni –
took the opportunity on this day to embody the Vincentian mission
and values through acts of service in the community.
Our Staten Island volunteers numbered 100 and participated in 5
various activities throughout Staten Island. Sr. Joan Mahoney,
C.N.D., led the group in prayer before teams dispersed to their
respective sites:
- Cross-Road Foundation
Helped assemble 'baby bottles' used for donations and information
outreach - Kids On Campus
Games, activities and lunch for children visiting St. John’s from
Project Hospitality and St. Mary of the Assumption Parish. - Lily Pond Nursing Home
Volunteers spent time with the residents playing BINGO, bowling and
just spending time talking with them - “Making Strides” Walk and Breast Cancer
Awareness Month Prep
This group of volunteers made ribbons, “SURVIVOR” sashes,
and a remembrance wreath, which will all be used during the month
of October. - NYC Park Cleanup
Cleanup of Midland Beach
The day was a success as our volunteers returned with stories of
how sharing a few hours of their time greatly impacted the lives of
strangers and they saw “what a difference a day makes.”
