An outgrowth of the All-Stars program was creation of the Leadership and Career Academy in partnership with the New York City Department of Homeless Services (DHS), in order to provide summer job and life skills training to the neediest members of the New York City community. The Academy will be the first crossdisciplined academic skills building program of its kind, and will allow not only inner-city youth, but their parents, to benefit from the academic offerings of the University. This unique collaboration between DHS, ASASNY and St. John’s University will serve 100 innercity youth ages 7-12, and 40 parents, many of whom are single heads of households, from seven transitional shelters throughout Queens and Brooklyn. For four weeks, parents and their children will travel to St. John’s Queens campus to take part in separate, yet coordinated, educational tracks taught by St. John’s faculty and student volunteers. While assisting parents to improve job and life skills is an important part of the program, they also will receive computer and literacy training aimed at helping them to help their children with school work, thereby multiplying the program’s benefits.
