Responding to changing societal trends, the University introduced
new areas of study and enhanced learning facilities. Recognizing
the continuing impact of the Internet and 9/11, St. John’s is the
first and only New York metropolitan-area university to offer a
Bachelor of Science degree in
Computer Security Systems. The U.S. Bureauof Statistics
predicts a 27 percent rise in computer-related positions, mainly in
security, through 2014. By leveraging its leadership position both
in technology and criminal justice, St. John’s is developing into a
center of excellence in computer security. Courses are taught with
an emphasis on the ethical responsibilities accompanying expertise
securing the confidentiality of electronic data. “St. John’s
dedication to tying ethical values to academic values makes us a
natural fit for training exemplary leaders to combat computer
crime,” says Mathematics, Science and Computer Science Professor
and Division Chair
Ronald W. Fechter.
