Discover the World, a semesterlong 15-credit innovative
multicountry study abroad experience, makes it possible for
students to live and learn in as many as three international cities
in just one semester. This pioneering concept is structured to
enable participants to spend five weeks immersing themselves in the
language and culture of each country. Consistent with St. John’s
mission, Discover the World is making service a cornerstone of this
program by incorporating service opportunities into every site. As
part of the course requirements, students are expected to write
reflection papers on their service.
Students have enthusiastically embraced Discover the World. Says
one participant: “I feel like I’m walking in someone else’s shoes.”
Another puts it this way: “What wouldn’t I give to spend at least
one more day in Rome. Part of me never thought I could make it a
month away from my friends and family and New York. If this trip
has given me anything more than amazing memories, it’s a newfound
sense of self. In Rome, I found what I am capable of and am
thankful that for a month of my life I had the zchance to call it
home.” With 34 percent of the students who signed up for Discover
the World’s Spring 2007 pilot semester in the highest need category
the University is continuing to honor its commitment to making
educational opportunities available to all students.
