On January 20, 2006, St. John’s Inaugural Basketball Legacy
Honors Dedication debuted, honoring 10 legendary all-time St.
John’s basketball stars and illustrious Coaches Joe Lapchick and
Lou Carnesecca. The festivities took place on the Queens Campus and
continued at half time at Madison Square Garden during the St.
John’s-Pittsburgh game, at which the Red Storm triumphed.
The roster of honorees included such greats as Walter Berry,
Lloyd “Sonny” Dove and Tony Jackson. The criteria for selection in
addition to athletic achievement were based on character and
excellence as a team member. Permanent banners were hung in
Carnesecca Arena to commemorate each player’s unique contributions
to St. John’s mythic basketball history. Plans are to continue to
confer Legacy Honors in the future.
