Spring in Asia: Vietnam

It is a nation of over 80 million people, struggling to become one of the "Asian Tigers" in the midst of globalization. Eleven St. John’s students studied this developing nation first-hand for two and a half weeks. As they traveled through Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), the Cu Chi tunnels and the Me Kong River Delta, students were challenged to think about solution-based approaches to peace, development and sustainability in Vietnam.

Students attended lectures by the professor and distinguished Vietnamese and American experts, toured a Nike footwear factory and met with members of Global Alliance. This partnership of private, public and non-governmental organizations is charged with researching workplace experience and the future prospects of workers for Nike contracted factories. Truly, an unmatched inside-out view of global production.

Future program opportunities to study in China, The Galapagos Islands and Bulgaria are planned for 2005.
