At Your Service
The division of Student Life coordinated placement of more than 2,300 students in service-learning projects, an integral part of St. John’s course work. This was an increase of 50% from 2001-2002.

Here are three success stories:

  • In Professor Steven Papamarcos’ Management class on the Staten Island campus, a graduate student recently developed a business plan to rehabilitate affordable housing units in Trenton, NJ. The student has incorporated as D. Onofrio, Inc. and has purchased two units to be rehabilitated and made available as a subsidized rental.

  • One Academic Service-Learning group helped found the only African-American microbrewery in Harlem. The company is based on the model of Paul Newman’s salad dressings, with a percentage of the profits going back into the community. They are going national.

  • A management professor divvied his Academic Service-Learning students up into teams of six and sent them to six constituents. Their assignment: develop a better management plan for a soup kitchen. The class and professor critiqued all six proposals. The teams returned to their sites with revised plans. These implemented plans have made a remarkable impact.
