Committee on Latin American and Caribbean Studies

A record number of students enroll in the CLACS Advanced Interdisciplinary Certificate in Latin American and Caribbean Studies, more than in any other free-standing certificate program.

This interdisciplinary certificate, similar to a minor, is designed for students who want to learn about the cultures and societies of our neighbors to the south, as well as for those who are considering a career with involvement in the Latin American and Caribbean area.

Making Every Vote Count
In another instance of how the University lives out the Vincentian mission of providing service to new immigrants, St. John’s CLACS and the Verizon Foundation announced Phase II of the grant Civic Development and Empowerment Program: A Major Partnership Initiative. This is a collaborative effort between CLACS, Queens College and the New Immigrant Community Empowerment (NICE).

Phase II of the Civic Development and Empowerment Program will include the creation and implementation of an on-line course in civic participation intended to increase democratic civic competence. It will include a voter guide and City Council simulation games to enhance voter education, recruitment and participation. The users of this program learn about their responsibilities and rights as U.S. citizens through the on-line study of the national, state and local governments and histories.
