St. John’s University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences to
Host Seminar on
Prescription Drug Abuse and Safety and Security in the
Pharmacy
Staten Island, NY (September 17, 2012) - St. John’s College of
Pharmacy and Health Sciences will host a seminar that will provide
vital information to local pharmacists to help identify and deal
with prescription drug abuse and to maintain and ensure safety and
security in the pharmacy.
The Prescription Drug Abuse and Safety and Security in the
Pharmacy seminar was created in response to the concern over crimes
committed in pharmacies around the New York metropolitan areas and
the ever increasing occurrence of prescription drug misuse and
abuse.

6:30-7:30 p.m.
Safety and Security in the Pharmacy
• Identify classes of commonly misused and
abused prescription medications
• Recognize the signs and symptoms of addiction,
patient characteristics, and techniques that may suggest
prescription drug misuse and abuse
• Provide strategies to prevent misuse and abuse
of prescription medications, while still providing effective pain
relief
• Discuss the responsibility of the pharmacist in
preventing prescription misuse and abuse
7:30-830 p.m.
Safety and Security in the Pharmacy
• Discuss how to prevent or deter crimes in the
pharmacy
• Respond appropriately should an incident
occur
• Perform actions that assist with the
identification and apprehension of the criminal
The topics above will be presented by Sheila Brocavich, Pharm.D.,
CGP, BCACP, Assistant Clinical Professor, St. John’s University;
John Gilbride., B.S., M.A., Law Enforcement Liaison/Education
Programs, Purdue Pharma; and Nissa Mazzola, Pharm. D., Assistant
Clinical Professor, St. John’s University.
Pharmacists in all areas including; administration, education,
hospital, community, industry, managed care, consulting, and all
other health care professionals are welcome. The seminar is free
and Continuing Pharmacy Education credit will be provided for a $35
fee.
