Last month, St. John’s law students interested in pursuing a
career in politics came together for a breakfast program with
Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos. The lively conversation
focused on the roles of busin
ess
and law in local government, with Comptroller Maragos responding to
questions about the management of county finances during the Great
Recession and the obstacles he has encountered on his professional
path to public service.
Although he entered politics from the business world, Comptroller
Maragos stressed that law and business are both important to the
work of government officials. He also spoke about having the
passion and drive to pursue career goals, citing job satisfaction
as a key influencer of job performance.
When asked about significant challenges he has faced in his current
political role, Comptroller Maragos discussed the controversial
decision to privatize the public bus service in Nassau County.
Although the proposal met with resistance, he persisted and worked
out a satisfying compromise that has saved Nassau County taxpayers
money and improved customer service. Comptroller Maragos hopes to
transfer his success in Nassau County to his campaign for U.S.
Senate later this year.
For students in attendance, Comptroller Maragos offered an intimate
look at the relationship between politics, business and the law in
public service. To learn more about the Law School’s Career
