St. John's Rome Commencement Awards 52 New Master's Degrees

June 13, 2011

Rev. Donald J. Harrington, C.M., President of St. John’s, conferred 52 master’s degrees upon graduating students yesterday during the 15th Commencement Exercises at the University's Rome, Italy, campus.

“You (the students) have been provided with a great opportunity in receiving a St. John’s education here in Rome,” said Fr. Harrington. “May you always be grateful for that opportunity, and may you share the fruits of that education – whether it be in business, in international relations or in global development and social justice – with those who are in greatest need throughout our world.”

The ceremony brought Italian dignitaries, administrators, staff, friends and family members, as well as members of the University’s Board of Trustees, to the campus at Via Marcantonio Colonna, 21A, in central Rome. The following 52 master's degrees were conferred:

• 11 Master of Arts in Global Studies and Social Justice

• 24 Master of Arts in International Relations

• 17 Master of Business Administration

The University dedicated and blessed its current Rome campus in October, 2008. The four-story, 75,000-square-foot structure features 13 classrooms, 200 resident beds, a chapel, a courtyard and administrative offices.

The campus is owned by the Vincentian Community of priests and brothers. The Vincentians founded St. John’s in 1870 and continue to direct the University in the spirit and values of St. Vincent de Paul.

St. John's established its first Rome, Italy, campus 16 years ago at its original location, at Via Santa Maria Mediatrice, 24, near the Vatican.

“St. John’s has succeeded in having a great impact in Rome since 1995," Fr. Harrington noted. "Since that time, the University's Rome campus has graduated more than 500 students. These alumni have gone forth from St. John’s not merely with a high quality education, but with an ethical sense that serves them well as global citizens.”

"Graduates of our Rome campus are now present in the far reaches of our globe," Fr. Harrington added. "They represent St. John’s strength as the distinctive International University that it truly is.”
