St. John’s Welcomes Residential Students in the Class of 2013

August 31, 2009

On Saturday, August 29, nearly 1500 freshmen and their parents were welcomed to St. John’s University’s Queens campus during the annual Freshmen Move-In Day. This year spirits ran high as Megamovers, a student volunteer group, and ROTC cadets assisted the new students and their parents cart luggage, bedding, electronics and many other student necessities into Hollis, DaSilva, Carey, and Donovan Halls in the Residence Village and nearby St. Vincent Hall.

“I really like my room and I heard a lot of great things about living in Donovan Hall from my Orientation Leaders,” enthused Kevin Grover, who plans to major in Business Management. “They explained that it is the perfect dorm to meet a lot of people and that everyone’s door is always open.” The Montana native added that he’s looking forward to the new experience: “I am excited about the Activities Fair [September 8] because I want to get involved, I just don’t know how yet. And I’m really looking forward to the first soccer game because I love soccer!”

Johnathan Sires, a Political Science major from California, was excited too. “The room is cool and there is a lot of space for my things, but I really like it because it’s an opportunity for me to get out of my house and experience living on my own. I look forward to starting my classes and seeing how challenging they are.”

Freshman Move-In Day also provides the new freshmen with the opportunity to meet their new roommates and become acclimated to living on a college campus - all before the first day of classes, Wednesday, September 2. The festive day also includes tours of the Queens campus and a barbeque, complete with fun games and other activities, where students could meet and get acquainted.

On Tuesday, September 1, the entire freshman class will come together at New Student Convocations, where they will be officially and enthusiastically welcomed to St. John’s University, followed by a barbecue and Welcome Fair.
