For
students eagerly waiting for spring, blue cotton candy, bumper
cars, a giant Ferris wheel and a sunny day, make for the fun of St.
John’s Spring Fling carnival. An annual St. John’s tradition,
Spring Fling is one of the major events that the University hosts
throughout the year to build a sense of community through vibrant,
on-campus activities.
On April 24, 2009, students, faculty and staff gathered on the
Great Lawn of the Queens campus of St. John’s to enjoy the
carnival’s giant slide and other free rides; games including ping
pong and pool; customized t-shirt booth; delicious Dip and Dots ice
cream, popcorn and snow cones.

Spring Fling is part of St. John’s Spring Week—a weeklong
celebration at the Queens campus filled with activities and events
that encourage students to take a break from their studies to enjoy
the beautiful weather and the campus community before the end of
the school year.
“Today is a really great day. It’s like a reward for working
hard during the semester and a chance to just hang out and have fun
with your friends,” said Yadira Sol, a sophomore biology major,
while waiting in line for ice cream.
The celebration was sponsored by the Student Programming Board and
Residence Hall Association with support from the Office of Campus
Activities.
The week’s festivities included the Liftoff BBQ with street
festival-style food and the Seven Fashion Show sponsored by the
Fashion Club and hosted by Toccara from the MY9 television show
“America’s Next Top Model.” Spring Week wouldn’t be complete
without a concert—the 2009 spring concert, Audiowave, featured
acclaimed musical acts Lupe Fiasco and N.E.R.D.
Spring Week events demonstrate St. John’s commitment to creating a
dynamic campus life for its students and broaden the student
experience at St. John’s.
