St. John's University President, Rev. Donald J. Harrington, C.M.
has appointed Robert A. Mangione, Ed.D., currently Dean of the
College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, to serve as Interim
Provost, effective August 1.
“St. John’s has been searching for a Provost to replace Julia
Upton, RSM, Ph.D., who has chosen to return to the faculty as
Distinguished Professor of Theology and who will also hold the
title of Special Assistant to the President,” said Rev. Harrington,
C.M. “I trust that the University community will join me in
offering Bob our gratitude and support as he assumes this new
assignment until a permanent Provost is named.”
The committee appointed to lead the Provost search under the
chairmanship of School of Law Dean Michael Simons will continue its
work until a suitable candidate for the position is identified.
Rev. Harrington, C.M. will appoint an Interim Dean of the College
of Pharmacy and Health Sciences to temporarily assume Dr.
Mangione’s role while he is fulfilling the responsibilities of
Provost.
Dr. Mangione, who has been Dean of the College of Pharmacy and
Health Sciences since 1999, is also Professor of Pharmacy and
University Faculty Athletic Representative to the National
Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). He joined the St. John’s
faculty in 1979 and, during his tenure, has been a clinical faculty
member at Nassau County Medical Center (1979-1981) and at the
Schneider Children’s Hospital of Long Island Jewish Medical Center
(1981-1990). While at the Children’s Hospital, Dr. Mangione was
also the institution’s Pediatric Clinical Pharmacy Coordinator. He
was appointed Assistant Dean for Pharmacy Student Affairs in 1990,
Associate Dean in 1996 and Dean of the College in 1999. Prior to
joining the faculty of the College of Pharmacy and Allied Health
Professions, Dr. Mangione interned at Lenox Hill Hospital and
completed his residency at Mercy Medical Center.
Dean Mangione earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Pharmacy from
St. John’s and also received his P.D. and Ed.D. in Educational
Administration and Supervision from The School of Education. He has
authored or co-authored over 100 professional publications. His
research interests include Pharmaceutical Care for Patients with
Celiac Disease, Pediatric Pharmacotherapy, and Poverty Issues in
Healthcare and Education. He maintains professional pharmacy
licensure in New York State and is an active member of the
Scientific/Medical Advisory Board of the National Foundation for
Celiac Awareness. He previously served as the President of the Long
Island Society of Hospital Pharmacists, editor of the New York
State Journal of Pharmacy, and as contributing editor to the
Children’s Hospital Quarterly and U.S.
Pharmacist. Dr. Mangione was also a professional member of the
New York State Board of Pharmacy for 10 years and is currently an
extended member of the Board.
