The Fine Arts program at St. John’s University’s College of Arts
and Sciences has received the most prestigious accreditation
attainable by a Fine Arts program, according to Professor Paul
Fabozzi, chairman of the Department
of Fine Arts. In essence, it puts the St. John’s program on a
par with the most prestigious and well known art schools in the New
York area.
The accreditation, given by the National Association of
Schools of Art and Design, is recognition that the St. John’s
program meets the highest standards in structure of the curriculum
and in quality of the faculty and facilities. It was actively
sought by the Fine Arts Department and is a result of three years
of fact finding, campus visits and interviews and required nine
binders of documentation. Professor Fabozzi admits that the process
was a lot of hard work, but it was “an opportunity to prove to
ourselves and to inform the outside community of” the high caliber
of our program. “No other university in New York City or on Long
Island has this accreditation,” he added, and although it is not
required of a School of Art, “it’s the only accreditation
recognized by the U. S. Department of Education.”
There are currently about 130 students majoring in the Fine Arts
program, which includes Creative Photography, Fine Arts, Graphic
Design and Illustration.
