St. John's University announced April 13 that Norm Roberts,
Associate Head Coach at Kansas University, will be the next head
coach of the Red Storm men's basketball team. Roberts was formally
introduced at a news conference today.
"We are very excited to have Norm take the reins of our men's
basketball program," said Rev. Donald J. Harrington, C.M.,
President of St. John's. "At a time when we needed a skilled coach,
a leader and a man of great character, we managed to find all three
in Norm. We have every confidence that he will be the kind of coach
our University needs, leading our players both on an off the
court."
One of the top recruiters in the country, Coach Roberts' primary
duties at Kansas were recruiting and scouting, as well as perimeter
player development. Roberts spent four years as head coach at his
alma mater, Queens College, and four years as the freshman coach at
Archbishop Molloy High School in New York, where he coached current
NBA point guard Kenny Anderson. Coach Roberts is a member of the
National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and Black Coaches
Association.
"This is coming home," said Coach Roberts. "It's very exciting
to be coaching in New York again, at a place where I always dreamed
of doing the job. When I was growing up, Lou Carnesecca was on the
sidelines [at St. Johns] and that's where I dreamed of
playing."
