The Office of the Provost has announced that 10 upper-class
students have been awarded Summer Research Stipends for 2005
through the University’s Graduate Admission Assistance Program
(GAAP). Selected by a committee of faculty and administrators, each
student will receive a $2800 stipend to fund research in his or her
area of interest and will be required to present a paper on the
findings at the end of summer.
Dr. Konrad T. Tuchscherer, Assistant Provost for External
Scholarships and Fellowships and Assistant Professor of History at
St. John’s calls this year’s group of candidates, the “best of the
best. Selection was highly competitive, with only one out of every
four applications receiving an award.”
As prestigious graduate programs require applicants to have
conducted research in their chosen area of study, these stipends
provide students with the opportunity to do that research,
increasing the likelihood that they’ll gain entrance into the
graduate programs of their choice.
About 40 students responded to the letters, e-mails, flyers and
postings on Web Digest and St. John’s Central calling for
applications. Exceptional applicants were sought by the committee
which also encouraged faculty to recommend candidates. Criteria for
selection included strength of proposed summer project, mentor’s
reference and applicant’s academic profile. As a group the selected
candidates had a combined GPA of over 3.8.
