Queens, NY – Standing before faculty, administrators and staff
gathered in Lou Carnesecca Arena, Rev. Donald J. Harrington, C.M.,
President of St. John’s University, spoke of the intense loyalty
alumni feel toward St. John's even decades after
graduating.
“I've examined all the reasons for the way they feel about
this University," said Rev. Harrington. "And I
always come to the same conclusion: It's the people."
Rev. Harrington led the University in celebrating the people of
St. John’s at the Year-End Convocation on Thursday, May 26. An
annual tradition, the Convocation honored staff, professors and
administrators who embody the values of excellence and service at
the heart of St. John’s Vincentian mission.
Decked with carpeting, flowers and a stage decorated with the
seals of St. John’s six divisions, Carnesecca Arena echoed with
applause as Rev. Harrington presented Outstanding Achievement
Awards to fifteen staff members, ten faculty members and sixteen
administrators. Nine staff members and nine professors received
Retirement Citations – including some who had served St. John’s for
nearly half a century.
Provost Julia A. Upton, RSM, Ph.D., presented Rev. Richard J.
Devine, C.M., S.T.D., to receive the President’s Medal for
distinguished service to St. John’s University and the Vincentian
mission.
The Year-End Convocation is one of many ways that St. John’s
celebrates the dedicated people who serve the University. We invite
