The St. John's University Art Gallery serves as a cultural venue
for the campus and its diverse local communities. Through the
years, the Gallery has gradually grown from a campus gallery to a
nationally recognized institution. Exhibitions such as "Images from
the Atomic Front," curated by Prof. Denise Rompila as well as
"Marshall Arisman's-Power Animals" and "Commissioned
Non-Commissioned," curated by Prof. Joseph Adolphe has received
wide attention, including positive reviews from such publications
as Newsweek and The Chronicle of Higher Education. In addition, the
Gallery gives visibility to the artistic talents of students and
faculty in the Department of Fine Arts, which was recently
accredited by NASAD (The National Association of Schools of Art and
Design).
Annually the Gallery serves as the site for up to seven exhibits
that focus on integrating the arts and education and that help to
develop aesthetic awareness within the University community.
Hundreds of visitors, including St. John's faculty and students,
organized field trips from local schools and organizations, as well
as well-known figures within the international art community have
visited the Gallery. Of these visitors, 40 percent are from the
local New York metropolitan area, 50 percent are members of the
University community and the remaining 10 percent are tourists.
Each year, the exhibits encourage and engage individuals to think
creatively with a focus on multidisciplinary themes that create
space for reflection and intellectual debate. Now, newly renamed
the Dr. M.T. Geoffrey Yeh Art Gallery, the Gallery is poised to
enhance its growing reputation as a significant cultural center
within the metropolitan area.
