Led by Fr. James J. Maher, C.M., Campus Ministry brought the
University community closer together to remember those affected by
Hurricane Katrina in the Gulf Coast region on Wednesday, September
7.
The prayer service for the people affected by Hurricane Katrina
used the symbol of water as a point of reflection. Water is at the
same time both destructive and life giving. Water is a source of
life. We as humans can not survive too long with our water. It is
also an important symbol in the Church as it is used in Baptism to
symbolize a cleansing from sin to a life with Christ. It reflects
the resurrection the passing from death to life. In the prayer
service we prayed for a new life for all those affected by the
destructive wind and water of Katrina. Water was carried into
church for the prayer service from the baptismal fount in the
Narthex. At the end of the Prayer service the congregation blessed
one another with the water as a sign of our call to help one
another and as a sign of new life, the life of the spirit that
flows through us to the people of Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi,
Florida, and to all who have been affected by the Hurricane.
