Julia A. Upton, RSM, Ph.D., Professor of Theology and Religious Studies, is the Provost of St. John’s University, overseeing the academic programs of the University’s six colleges on five campuses. She has been a member of the Department of Theology and Religious Studies since 1979 and continues to teach at least one course each year.
Dr. Upton is a member of the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, holds a doctorate in Contemporary Systematic Theology from Fordham University, Masters Degrees in English and Theology from St. John’s University, and a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Ohio Dominican University.
Dr. Upton is a member of the Liturgical Commission of the Diocese of Brooklyn. She has served on the International Commission on English in the Liturgy and is currently serving as a Consultant to the United States Catholic Bishops’ Conference’s Committee on Divine Worship. Her theological research centers upon sacramental theology, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, and reconciliation. She has published five books and numerous articles. Her most recent book is Worship in Spirit and Truth: The Life and Legacy of H.A. Reinhold. Fr. Hans Angar Reinhold (1897-1968) was a key leader in the Liturgical Movement in the United States.
