Interested in spending an entire semester learning and
exploring Paris with St. John’s University? Yes you
can!
Students already signed up for St. John’s first-ever semester-long
study abroad program in Paris are getting ready for the experience
of a lifetime. This fall they will be immersed in the rich culture,
language and history of French life with multiple opportunities to
serve the poor and disadvantaged of Paris.
Picture yourself in their shoes. Behold the iconic Eiffel tower,
explore the Grand Palais museum or the Champs-Elysees, witness the
grandiose architecture and wander through the bustling Latin
Quarter.
This new program, a joint effort of the Departments of Languages
and Literatures and Government and Politics in St. John’s College
of Liberal Arts and Sciences, allows you to spend four months at
the Maison Mère, St. John’s newly renovated
Paris campus, located in the heart of the French capital
city.
Once enrolled, you’ll find a wide selection of courses that marry
academic excellence and real-world experience with full immersion
into the social and cultural aspects of the City of
Lights.
“I am a big believer in study abroad,” says
Zoe Petropoulou, Ph.D, Associate Professor of French and
Coordinator of the French Program. “With the aid of Professor Luba
Racanska, Ph.D., Associate Professor and Chair for Government and
Politics, we have successfully blended Paris into our courses. From
music to international relations we have created a unique and
unforgettable experience.”
“This Paris program is about student enrichment,” adds Dr.
Rancanska. “I feel that study abroad offers students the
opportunity to enrich their lives by making this opportunity
available to all students at St. John’s.”
Internships Available for the Fairly
Fluent
Are you an intermediate to advance speaker of the language? You can
become part of one of the first cohorts to join the Paris workforce
as an intern. Interact with locals and perfect your language skills
with partnered organizations in politics, international relations
and law and government.
“This is a jewel we can offer to all our students,” says Dr.
Petropoulou. “By incorporating an internship into your studies in
Paris you can make future connections, enrich your experience,
promote global citizenship, develop self-awareness and increase
opportunities for greater chances of success for the future.”
The Paris study aboard opportunity is another example of the
University’s commitment to providing students with a decidedly
global education, meaningful hands-on service to the poor and a
resultant competitive advantage. The course has been expanded to a
full semester to promote academic excellence, acknowledge
international realities, cultivate language proficiency and deliver
the required preparation needed for students to succeed in a global
marketplace.
St. John’s rich tradition of providing an affordable education has
made funding easier for students who wish to study abroad. Tuition
for the Paris program is comparable to that at St. John’s U.S.
campuses. Once approved for financial aid, students who register
for six or more credits will receive an additional $1,000 toward
their study abroad tuition.
The goal is to enroll a maximum of 20-30 students per semester of
which 10 are considered advanced speakers of the language. The
Paris course currently has open slots for all students who wish to
study overseas.
