New Athletic Director Embraces “Excellence in Everything We Do”
When Anton Goff, St. John’s new Director of Athletics, came to the Queens campus this past December, he shared this prediction: the University’s 17 men’s and women’s teams are destined to dominate the BIG EAST Conference and become a competitive force in national college sports.
He is equally passionate about the academic success of St. John’s student-athletes—including high graduation rates. “Together,” he declared, “we will embrace excellence in everything we do.”
Mr. Goff comes to St. John’s after two and a half years heading athletics at the University of Hartford, where he spearheaded significant improvements in fund-raising and student-athletes’ academic achievements. He has more than 20 years’ experience as a sports administrator at the University of Maryland, Michigan State, Kent State, and Bowie State.
A winning athletic tradition, Mr. Goff observed, contributes to the excitement of the St. John’s experience. “I want the entire student population to feel connected to athletics, support their teams, and be a part of the sports experience,” he said. “When we have games, I want them to be campus events, not just athletic events.”
A self-described “born competitor,” the former wide receiver at Bowling Green from 1986 to 1989 says he was drawn to St. John’s by more than a desire to win. “Having the opportunity to be part of the Vincentian mission really touched me,” Mr. Goff said. “To be able to serve those who don’t necessarily have a strong voice in society is ultimately what brought me to the University.”
“I am honored to join the St. John’s family,” he added, “and extremely humbled that President Gempesaw has entrusted me to lead the Department of Athletics.”
