Former St. John’s standout Rafael Diaz has signed a contract to join the New York Red Bulls for the upcoming MLS season, it was announced this morning by the organization.

Diaz, the Red Storm’s career leader in shutouts with 32, will become the fourth St. John’s alumnus currently playing in the nation’s top professional league, joining Connor Lade (NYRB), Tim Parker (Vancouver Whitecaps) and 2003 MA.C. Hermann Trophy Winner Chris Wingert (Real Salt Lake).

Diaz, a two-time All-BIG EAST selection during his tenure in Queens, was a four-year starter for the Red Storm, anchoring the Johnnies to three NCAA Tournament appearances between the pipes. The Rockaway, N.J., native recorded no fewer than nine wins in each of his four seasons for the Johnnies and compiled a career goals against average of 0.84, which ranks 10th in program history. The Morris Hills High School product also ranks first in school history in games played (72), second in minutes played (6,620) and third in wins (40).

After graduating from St. John’s, Diaz played one season with Orlando City in USL before signing on for two seasons with Red Bulls II. Last season with NYRB II, Diaz finished the year with a 0.905 goals against average, the best in USL among players with at least five appearances. Diaz allowed just two goals in five appearances, tallying three clean sheets for the eventual USL Champions.
