Carla Hayden made history when she was confirmed as the 14th Librarian of Congress, becoming the first woman and first African-American to hold the position. Most of her predecessors have been from scholarly institutions, but Dr. Hayden is the first professional librarian to hold this position, having served for 23 years as the CEO of Baltimore's Enoch Free Public Library since 1993.
