SJU Junior Dominates BIG EAST Track and Field Championship

Adding to her already stellar athletic performance this year, Claire Mooney ’15C claimed her second BIG EAST title of 2013–14 by, leading SJU’s women’s track and field team to a tie for fifth place at the conference’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship.

The Red Storm tied for fifth with Butler University and finished with 88 team points at the BIG EAST competition, held on May 10–11 in Villanova, PA. In addition, SJU claimed six medals at the event, garnering the fourth-most all-conference elections out of the eight member schools.

Mooney crossed the finish line first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.69 seconds, a shade off her personal best of 54.61 seconds, putting her at eighth on the all-time list at SJU. She also posted the fastest time of the preliminary round, clocking in at 55.01 seconds.

Mooney’s first outdoor conference title is also the Red Storm’s first overall since 2008, when Maxine Foster ’07CPS claimed SJU’s last 400-meter dash crown. Mooney claimed the indoor 400-meter dash conference title this indoor season as well as the Eastern College Athletic Conference indoor title in the same event.

Also lining up in Saturday’s final of the 400-meter dash, sophomore Pariis Garcia ’16C just missed a podium as she posted a time of 55.81 second, securing fourth place and All-BIG EAST accolades.

“Our team battled the entire weekend, producing an array of personal and seasonal best performances that resulted in numerous podium appearances,” said St. John’s head coach Jim Hurt. “I am very proud of our team and staff’s hard work this year and look forward to additional successes in the weeks and years ahead.”

Coming off their strong performance at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championship, SJU’s women’s track and field team continues its postseason push, sending  15 student-athletes to the 2014 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships at  Princeton University on May 16–18.  

The ECAC Championships, for which athletes qualify by meeting specific competitive standards, marks SJU’s final outdoor competition before the NCAA Championships, which kick off on May 29 with the NCAA East Regional in Jacksonville, FL.
