St. John’s Law Associate Dean Larry Cunningham Presents at NALP Program on Law Student Professional Development

Tuesday, April 15, 2014

It was standing-room only for Associate Academic Dean and Professor Larry Cunningham’s talk on law student professional development at the National Association for Law Placement’s (NALP) 2014 Annual Education Conference in Seattle, WA.

Presenting with Grover Cleveland, author of Swimming Lessons for Baby Sharks; Yih-hsien Shen, Assistant Director of Career Services at Harvard Law School; and Professor Sandee Magliozzi of Santa Clara Law School, Dean Cunningham discussed how law schools can incorporate professional development and so-called “soft skills” into their curricula.

By way of example, he highlighted recent curricular innovations at St. John’s Law, including the required lawyering skills course for all incoming 1Ls; a 1L training program in career development; and the revamped externship seminar, which helps students develop proficiency in letter writing, factual investigation, and other skills needed for a successful law practice.

Dean Cunningham live tweeted from the NALP conference, which brings together industry experts, law school career development professionals, and law firm recruiters for a wide-ranging conversation on all areas of the legal profession—from recruiting and career counseling to professional development, diversity and inclusion, and more.
