The ancient tradition included an invitation to the poor as invited guests. As the tradition was carried to and celebrated in the Americas, it became the custom to ask for donations to assist the poor. The funds raised at last year’s program at St. John’s Staten Island Campus were presented to Hurricane Sandy Relief efforts of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
