The Veronica Smith Alumnae Association Memorial Scholarship makes dreams come true – just ask Devika Kesavan ’19P.
“Without the help of this scholarship, I wouldn’t have been able to go to St. John’s,” explained Kesavan, a freshman in the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. “I applied online and was so happy when I found out that I had been awarded the scholarship – it was the deciding factor to come to St. John’s, and I couldn’t be happier.”
The Veronica Smith Alumnae Association Memorial Scholarship is funded primarily through the efforts of the Alumnae Association at their various events, and is available to high-school seniors who are an immediate relative of an alumnus.
“In my case, my brother had graduated from St. John’s,” Kesavan continued. “He enjoyed his time at SJU, which made me realize even more that this University is the right fit for me.”
Kesavan’s ultimate goal is to work in the long-term-care industry, helping nursing-home patients through medicine control. She is confident that her St. John’s education will help her realize those goals.
“The program here is fantastic, and students are really encouraged to think proactively about their professional aspirations,” she said. “I’m a freshman and I’m already looking into joining organizations and getting more involved in my field.”
As a female, Kesavan feels a special connection to the University’s alumnae – especially those who helped fund her scholarship. She hopes that she, too, can contribute to the scholarship after she’s established her career.
“It’s an honor to be part of this community,” she said. “Giving back is why I’m here, so I naturally want to help others who are in that same position. Our alumnae are wonderful, and I’m looking forward to one day being part of that special group.”
