Dr. Mangione Previously served as Dean of the College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions
St. John’s University President, Rev. Donald J. Harrington, C.M. announced that the University’s Board of Trustees has elected Robert A. Mangione, Ed.D., R.Ph., as Provost, effective immediately. Dr. Mangione has been serving as Interim Provost since August.
“I am delighted to announce that Robert A. Mangione, Ed.D., R.Ph. has been elected by the St. John’s Board of Trustees as the next Provost of our University,” said Rev. Harrington. “Bob has provided outstanding service to St. John’s for over 30 years as both a faculty member and administrator. His commitment to academic excellence, dedication to our special Vincentian and Catholic mission, scholarly accomplishments, and concern for our students make him an exemplary choice for this position. During the past several months, he has been very effective in the role of Interim Provost; I am grateful for his willingness to assume these responsibilities on a permanent basis.”
Dr. Mangione received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in pharmacy from the College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions (now the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences) and a professional diploma and doctorate in education from The School of Education and Human Services (now The School of Education.) He joined the faculty of the College of Pharmacy in 1979 and became Dean in 1999.
A prolific scholar, Dr. Mangione has authored or co-authored more than 100 publications in a variety of journals, including the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association, Journal of Urban Health, Practical Gastroenterology and the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education. His most recent work has been in the field of celiac disease and adverse effects associated with gluten in medications. He has also served on the New York State Board of Pharmacy and the Medical/Scientific Advisory Board of the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness. He holds membership in the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, Rho Chi Pharmaceutical Honor Society and the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy.
During his tenure at St. John’s he has served as Professor of Pharmacy, University Faculty Athletic Representative to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), a clinical faculty member at Nassau County Medical Center from 1979 to 1981 and at the Schneider Children's Hospital of Long Island Jewish Medical Center from 1981 to 1990. While at the Children's Hospital, Dr. Mangione also served as the institution's Pediatric Clinical Pharmacy Coordinator. Prior to joining the faculty of the College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions, Dr. Mangione served as a Pharmacy Intern at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan and a Pharmacy Resident at Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre, Long Island.
St. John's University has honored Dr. Mangione with the Outstanding Faculty Achievement Award in 1989, the Vincentian Mission Award in 1995, the Pietas Medal in 2002 and the St. Vincent de Paul Medal in 2008. Pharmacy students voted him Teacher of the Year in 1987, 1989, 1990 and 1996 and he was presented with a Leader in Education Award from the St. John’s University School of Education in 2009.
