Thomas Lawrence currently serves as St. John’s University Vice President of Public Safety. He joined the university as the Executive Director of Public Safety in 2003, a position he held until 2005. As Vice President of Public Safety he is responsible for the safety and security of approximately 25,000 students, faculty, administrators and staff. This includes all educational facilities, student housing, sporting events and administrative operations. In the event of an emergency, Mr. Lawrence acts as St. John’s Incident Commander coordinating the operational response of all functional units of the university while supporting local agencies such as the NYPD, FDNY, and OEM, and briefing the St. John’s Executive Management Team. He is also responsible for researching the suitability of travel for the Global Studies Program and making the appropriate recommendations. Mr. Lawrence was involved in a state-of-the-art upgrade of the safety and security systems on campus keeping pace with the changing technology and the changing demands on our society. He has a staff of 90 Public Safety Officers supporting the campuses.
Before working at St. John’s University, Mr. Lawrence worked for the New York City Police Department for 23 years retiring as a Deputy Chief in 2003. During his time with the NYPD, he worked in all boroughs of the city with the exception of Staten Island. Prior to his promotion to Deputy Chief, he served as the Commanding Officer of the 10TH Precinct (Chelsea), 9TH Precinct (East Village), and Midtown Precinct South (Times Square). His time with the New York City Police Department has helped to build a strong relationship between the university and the NYPD.
Mr. Lawrence has a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from C. W. Post. He is married since 1982. He and his wife have two sons.
