Norean R. Sharpe, Ph.D.

Norean R. Sharpe, Ph.D., began her tenure as Dean and Professor of Decision Sciences at The Peter J. Tobin College of Business on August 1, 2016. In this role, she oversees an undergraduate business program with 2,500 business majors, and seven graduate programs with 500 students, all supported by more than 150 faculty and staff on the University’s Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, and Rome, Italy, campuses. The Tobin College also comprises the acclaimed School of Risk Management, which offers top-tier programs in Actuarial Science, Taxation, and Risk Management.

Dr. Sharpe has been a scholar and administrator for more than 25 years. Prior to joining St. John’s, she served as Senior Associate Dean at the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University. Under her leadership, the undergraduate business program experienced a 35 percent jump in applications; a significant increase in average verbal and math SAT scores; a drop in the acceptance rate from 24 to 16 percent; and a five percent rise in yield—placing McDonough in the top-tier of all undergraduate business schools in the United States.

During Dr. Sharpe’s tenure at Georgetown, her primary focus was to expand global opportunities for all students. To support this effort, she established the Undergraduate Dean’s and Global Scholarship Funds, which enabled the distribution of more than $100,000 each summer to support students studying in overseas programs. Her major achievements were the development and implementation of numerous global initiatives—including the Global Business Consulting Experience; Global Business Fellows Program; custom summer programs in Barcelona and Hong Kong; Global Social Internships in Latin America; and a first-year seminar series entitled International Business, Public Policy, and Society. In addition to those programs, Dr. Sharpe focused on the admission and retention of a more diverse student body, and developed numerous mentoring programs aimed at raising the level of participation and performance of underrepresented students. She successfully gained philanthropic support for these programs from alumni and corporations.

In her first year at St. John’s University, Dr. Sharpe has successfully collaborated with faculty to develop three new programs—an online M.B.A. and two M.S. programs in Entrepreneurship and Global Management. In addition, she has worked with faculty to launch new Global Destination Courses in Barcelona and Tel Aviv. Dr. Sharpe is an accomplished researcher with more than 30 scholarly publications and a business textbook currently in its third edition. She consults with business schools worldwide on assessment and accreditation, including an all-women’s university in Saudi Arabia. Her current research focuses on increasing opportunities for female entrepreneurs in the Middle East. Dr. Sharpe earned her B.A. from Mount Holyoke College and her Ph.D. in Systems Engineering from the University of Virginia
