'Escape from Toxic Island’ - A Toxicology Awareness
Program
The Mid-Atlantic Society of Toxicology’s (MASOT) Education
and Outreach Committee recently debuted an innovative toxicology
program, entitled “
Escape to Toxic Island,” a program first developed by Dr. Diane
Hardej, Assistant Professor, for the College of Pharmacy and Health
Sciences.
Dr. Hardej originally developed this program for a middle school
health fair sponsored by the College last Spring, and as a result
of its success, presented the program to the MASOT Education
and Outreach Committee, of which she is the chair, and asked that
it be added as part of their summer educational programming.
The program was approved and with the help of Alan Fields,
Executive Director of After School All-Stars of New York, it was
presented to 140 students at the After School All-Stars Program on
August 16, 2012, at St. John’s University. The University serves as
one of the host campuses for After School All-Stars Program, which
serves minority children in low income and high risk
areas.
“Alan has been wonderful in welcoming our toxicology awareness
programs and giving us a perfect venue for teaching our young
people”, Dr. Hardej said.
