In 2003 St. John’s University launched the Academic Computing
Initiative (ACI), a broad-reaching program to put leading-edge
technology into the hands of students and the faculty that teaches
them. The ACI’s goal, to equip all incoming freshmen with laptop
computers and create a fully wireless network on three
campuses of the University’s five locations, was accomplished
in a period of five months from project approval.
With strategic partners Cisco Systems and Bearing Point, St.
John’s installed a completely new network able to handle the load
of a wireless network add-on. So impressed with the University’s
successful implementation of the ACI, Cisco used St. John’s as a
case study for all of their partners. The deployment of a
campus-wide laptop environment has improved teaching, learning and
living at St. John's University.
