— has biked solo for 59 days from New York to San Francisco,
nursed cholera patients in Haiti, assisted veterinarians in New
York and helped renovate Katrina-ravaged homes in New Orleans.
Simultaneously, she also earned her Bachelor
of Arts degree with honors from St. John’s College of
Liberal Arts and Sciences and began the

“Babette is one of the most courageous, caring and smart people I

issues like social justice, but of acting on these interests as
well. Whatever she decides to do in the future, I am sure she will

Melissa Snow '12G, Gaining the “Knowledge and Resources” to Fight
Injustice
October 4, 2011

By the time Melissa Snow ‘12G decided to return to school for her
Master’s degree, she had already made a huge impact in the fight
against human trafficking as Director of Programs for Shared Hope
International.
While earning her bachelor’s degree in
sociology at the University of Colorado, Melissa managed, developed
and evaluated nine projects at Shared Hope that fight sex
trafficking in the United States and abroad. “For the past eight
years,” she explains, “I’ve worked to rescue and restore survivors
of sex trafficking in India, Nepal, Fiji, South Africa, Kenya,
Jamaica and the United States. I’ve also created training videos
and resources to help law enforcement and social service providers
to identify and respond to trafficking victims.” With these
materials, she adds, “thousands have been trained and sensitized to
the importance of informed victim-centered response.”
Given the nature of her work, Melissa chose the multidisciplinary
Master’s
of Arts in Global Development and Social Justice at St. John’s
University. “I was ecstatic,” she says, “when I saw that the
title of the Master’s program included the core value of social
justice within the scope of global development.” According to
Melissa, an important component of the program is that it seeks to
spark a global dialogue on development by connecting students from
around the world.

Most Rev. David O’Connell, Bishop of Trenton (NJ) Gives Vincentian
Chair of Social Justice Lecture

“What would Vincent do now?” Rev. Donald J. Harrington, C.M.,
President of St. John’s University, asked during his remarks at the
2011 Vincentian Convocation held on Monday, Sept. 26 on the eve of
the Feast of St. Vincent de Paul. “I suggest the answers to that
question sit before you, the individuals who are honored tonight
are the answers to that question.”
The individuals Rev. Harrington, C.M. was
referring to were the esteemed honorees gathered in St. Thomas More
Church for the Vincentian Convocation, the cornerstone event of the
University’s annual Founder’s Week celebration. Among them,
His Excellency Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, Secretary, Holy See’s
Relations with States, was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws
degree by the University for his work in championing peace and
unity and spreading the word of Christ throughout the world.
“The theme of this convocation named after Saint Vincent speaks of
embracing charity and promoting peace,” said Archbishop Mamberti of
this year’s St. John’s convocation. “It is a particularly
significant theme, especially since just a few weeks ago we
commemorated the painful anniversary of September 11th,

Be Vincentian: Embrace Charity; Promote
Peace
“Charity demands that we sow peace where it does not
exist.”
– St. Vincent de Paul
Living the spirit of St. Vincent demands that we are filled with
charity, a love of God and love of our neighbor. Charity must
express itself in practical love, which has real effect. One
effect of charity is that we become promoters of peace, striving to
build a world of love and justice. Vincent de Paul, the Apostle of
Charity is our inspiration to be a person of peace with God as the
center of our lives enabling us to serve our neighbor and bring
God’s peace to our families, communities and to the world.
In the wake of the 10th anniversary of the iniquitous events of
9/11, we celebrate this 18th Annual Founder’s Week for the first
time during the week of the Feast of St. Vincent de Paul, September
27. St. Vincent de
Paul (1581–1660) is the founder of the Congregation of the
Mission (1617), the order of priests and brothers who sponsor St.
John’s University. St. Vincent was an extraordinary man of great
faith and humility who cared very deeply about people who were
poor. He sought new and creative ways to meet the spiritual
and material needs of the marginalized of 17th-century France and
beyond its borders. We celebrate his feast day on September 27, the
day of his death in 1660.

New and Returning Students Move In Despite Hurricane

As family, friends and volunteers helped incoming freshmen move
into their respective residence halls at St. John’s University on

Meanwhile, with Irene still days away from hitting the New York
metropolitan area, move in activities continued throughout Thursday
at the University’s Queens campus. More than 1,600 incoming
freshmen beat the heat and dodged occasional raindrops as they
settled into their new homes away from home. Unaffected to this
point by the major storm moving up the East Coast, the mood around
Donovan, DaSilva, Hollis and St. Vincent Halls was of

powerful Ways and Means Committee and authored several pieces
of landmark legislation designed to assure equitable treatment of
the disabled. But his most memorable accomplishments were to come
during his two terms as Governor of New York State. Serving from
1975 to 1982, he is widely credited with saving the City of New
York from bankruptcy during the fiscal crisis of the 1970’s. Among
the other accomplishments of his administration were inauguration
of the memorable “I Love New York” campaign and establishment of
the famed Empire State Games, another of his determined efforts to

Recipient
July 28, 2011
The latest St. John’s graduate to receive a Fulbright
Scholarship will spend the next academic year in Macau, where she
will study the region’s blend of Chinese and Portuguese cultures
while teaching English.
Athena Loch ‘11C, an English
major and
Art History minor, was a senior when she applied for the
prestigious award in October 2010. She is one of two new graduates
to earn a
Fulbright Scholarship. Recipient Woodley Pean ‘11C will use his
award to teach, volunteer and conduct research in the Dominican
Republic. Last year,
three graduate students received Fulbrights.
When Athena received word about her award this past May, she was
surprised as well as delighted. “I worried that it was taking too
long to hear from them,” she recalled. “But the GAAP Office assured
me that some applicants don’t get a response until a bit later.”

Priscilla Frederick ’11CPS: Student-Athlete Eyes the Olympics
July 14, 2011

Whether she’s studying, high-jumping or hiking the mountains of
Panama on a Vincentian
mission, Priscilla Frederick ‘11CPS is driven.
In fact, within 24 hours of attending
St. John’s Graduation Ceremonies in May, the 22 year-old
high-jumper embarked on a two-week mission to Panama, through the
University’s PLUNGE
Program.
There, she worked with other students on a wide range of
desperately-needed projects that helped the residents of a rural
Panamanian community. “It was the most amazing experience,” she
said. “There was no running water and no electricity, and despite
all this, there was so much love. It really put things into
perspective for me.”
Upon her return to the U.S., she quickly jetted out west to
Eugene, OR, for the annual USA Track & Field Championships.
There, she achieved a season-best high jump of 1.83 meters (6
feet), which earned her a seventh-place finish and her fourth
top-ten USA Track & Field Championship finish in as many years.
“She’s the real deal,” said
Jim Hurt, St. John's Head Track & Field Coach. “She took
two weeks off from training to go to Panama and she was still able
to come right back, get focused and perform.”
Her seventh-place finish in Oregon qualifies her for the pool of
athletes for selection to the USA Team for the 2011 Pan American
Games in Mexico. It also bodes well for Priscilla’s next goal:
qualifying for the Team USA and the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
According to Hurt, the three-time All American’s chances of making
the team are quite good. “Her best jumps are still ahead of her, so
she’s got a great shot at the team,” he said.

St. John's School of Law Celebrates Commencement
2011
June 7, 2011
On
June 5, 2011, the Law School’s 260 J.D. candidates and 19 LL.M.
candidates convened at Carnesecca Arena for the 141st Commencement
Exercises. Associate Academic Dean and Professor of Law Margaret
Valentine Turano ‘77 served as Director of Proceedings for the
ceremony that included some 4000 family, friends, faculty,
administrators, staff and alumni in the Law School community.
Welcoming the students and their guests, Dean Michael A. Simons
expressed a “teacher’s pride” in the accomplishments of a class
that has come very far in its three years at St. John’s. Dean
Simons took special note of the many ways in which the graduates
had used their time and energy in law school to serve the poor and
the underrepresented, embodying St. John’s Vincentian commitment to
justice. Remembering three deceased members of the St. John’s
family - generous benefactor Maxine Belson, adjunct professor Judge
Robert Ross, and the graduates’ classmate, Tyler Ramaker - Dean
Simons said that their passing “reminds us how precious life is and
how important it is to savor our time with each other and to savor
days like today.” He also shared that the graduates are on a
professional journey filled with challenges and opportunities.
Their path to the profession began at Law School orientation and
continued to unfold during their time at St. John’s. “There are
many different paths to a rewarding career and life,” Dean Simons
said. “But, you don’t discover your path, you make it in an ongoing
process that will continue throughout your career.”

Surviving Katrina's Rage, History Student Earns Doctoral Degree at
St. John's
June 6, 2011
When
Hurricane Katrina struck the New Orleans region in 2005, many
residents had to put their plans on hold as businesses, educational
institutions and entire communities struggled first to survive and
then to recover.
For Ermioni Michailakis-Kambouris ‘11D.A., a secondary-school
teacher in New Orleans at the time, the hurricane was a
double-blow: not only did the storm ravage the home she shared with
her husband, but it also seemed to threaten her hope of entering a
doctoral program in history.
Ermioni achieved her dream at St. John’s University. At the Queens campus on May 15, she
received her Doctor of Arts degree in
Modern World History during the University’s 141st Commencement
Exercises. The interdisciplinary course of study allowed Ermioni to
combine independent research with a focus on teaching.
“I was looking for a doctoral program that would complement my
earlier degrees and areas of interest,” said Ermioni, who had
earned a master’s degree in International and Transcultural Studies
at Columbia University’s Teachers College. “The program at St.
John’s was the right fit.”
