Held from December 2 to 7, the activities drew more than 3,000 participants — a record number. “Winter Carnival has come to embody the strong spirit of community that distinguishes St. John’s,” said Jodi Cox ‘98C, ‘02GEd, Director of Campus Activities at the Queens campus. “Here at the Queens campus, it’s the Carnival’s 20th Anniversary, so we wanted to acknowledge it in a special way. The efforts of our students and administrators allowed us to do just that.”

Anthony Rodriguez ‘95SVC Achieves
Television Success on Hit Food Network Series

When Anthony Rodriguez ’95SVC arrived at St. John’s University in 1991, he already knew the path he wanted his life to take. A Communications major, he immediately joined the Television Club to learn as much as possible about television production, especially the cameras. “I always knew I wanted to shoot,” he said.

James Pellow, Ed.D., to Leave
St. John’s University to Become President and CEO of
Non-Profit Educational Organization

Rev. Donald J. Harrington, C.M., President of St. John’s announced today that James P. Pellow, Ed.D. will be leaving the University to accept a new position as President and CEO of the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE), effective on June 1, 2011. The Board of Directors of CIEE simultaneously announced the selection of Dr. Pellow today to succeed Dr. Stevan K. Trooboff upon his retirement. He will become the fourth CEO and President of CIEE in its more than 63-year history.

At the ceremony, St. John’s University also recognized Joaquin Navarro-Valls, M.D., who received an honorary Doctor of Science Degree and Archbishop Joseph Augustine Di Noia, O.P., who received an honorary Doctor of Laws Degree.

St. John’s University Mourns the Loss of Alumnus Bob Sheppard ’32C, '00HON
July 12, 2010

Bob Sheppard, an unmistakable voice in New York sports history, passed away at 99 years of age on Sunday at his home on Long Island. Appropriately dubbed “the Voice of God” for his stentorian diction and precise intonations, Sheppard served as the legendary Public Address Announcer for the New York Yankees from 1951-2007. He also served in the same capacity for the New York Giants of the National Football League from 1956-2006, and announced Brooklyn Dodger football games, Army-Navy football games and St. John’s University basketball and football games during his long and illustrious career.

St. John's and Grameen America Host "Borrowers' Market" for National Service Conference

Leaders of international service organizations learned about a unique partnership between St. John’s University and Grameen America that fights poverty through microfinancing during a session the University hosted for the 2010 National Conference on Volunteering and Service.

The session, “It’s a Borrower’s Market: Microfinance in Action,” took place at St. John’s Manhattan campus on Tuesday, June 29. It showcased the University’s service partnership with Grameen America, which focuses on enterprise and entrepreneurship as vehicles for helping those in need. Participants also browsed entrepreneurs’ booths at the Borrower’s Market, which St. John’s and Grameen America hosted at the campus.

She never planned to be an author, but Kristin Johansen ‘13TCB completed a children’s book during a freshman class in Rome, Italy. Diana Capalbo ‘13CPS anticipates seeing her first poetry in print. And Anthony O’Reilly ‘13CPS wrote a short story about traveling in Italy.

St. John’s students this year completed creative writing projects in Rome, Italy, as part of the University’s new Freshman Passport Program. The 67 students were the second group of freshmen in the program, more than doubling the number of the first participants in August 2009.

Scholar-Athlete Gavin Buckley: Getting the Most out of the St. John’s Experience

As a high-school senior in Maryland, Gavin Buckley ‘11C wanted to attend a big-city college that offered a strong sense of community, challenging academic programs and a chance to play lacrosse. He chose St. John’s University.

“St. John’s New York City location was a definite plus — it seemed like a really exciting place to be,” he explains. “Plus, St. John’s lacrosse program was new, so joining a new program and helping it reach a high level of competitiveness was really appealing.”

Associate Academic Dean and Professor of Law Margaret Valentine Turano ‘77L served as Director of Proceedings for the ceremony that included over 4,000 family, friends, faculty, administrators, staff and alumni in the Law School community.

 

Simone Pickersgill’12TCB: Discovers Herself by Discovering the World
June 03, 2010

When 20-year old Simone Pickersgill ’12TCB departed last spring to participate in St. John’s Discover the World program, she began a journey that broadened her spiritually, intellectually and socially. By the end of her 15-week, 18-credit sojourn studying in Salamanca, Rome and Paris, she understood what St. Augustine meant when he said, “the world is a book and those who do not travel read only a page.”

"Now," said Simone, "I tell every student: you must study abroad if you can." At St. John’s — where Global Studies is a vital part of the college experience — Simone was able to overcome financial challenges to studying abroad. She won a $5,000 Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship and received an extra Student Financial Services grant from the University.

St. John’s Students Featured in National Coke Commercial as Part of FOX-TV’s American Idol Broadcast

The Coca-Cola "Happiness Machine" viral video that was created for YouTube as part of the company’s "Doses of Happiness" program was made into a 30 second national television spot that aired May 25, on American Idol on Fox-TV at 8:00 p.m. EST. And, St. John’s University students were the stars of the video.

St. John’s Queens campus was selected as the location for the Coca-Cola commercial shoot at the end of the fall semester. The two-day viral video shoot surprised unknowing St. John’s students who ventured to the "Happiness Machine" for what they thought was a new Coke machine placed in Marillac Cafeteria. What they received were unusual prizes for their $1 purchase that ranged from flowers, to more than one Coke product at a time, six-inch hero sandwiches, pizzas, sunglasses and frosty mugs of Coke poured for them.

Distinguished Writer and Novelist Pete Hamill Highlights St. John’s 2010 Commencement Ceremonies on Staten Island

A familiar name to St. John’s University’s Class of 2010 graced the stage for this morning’s Graduation Ceremonies on Staten Island. Pete Hamill, well known journalist and author, whose book Downtown: My New York was required reading when these graduates were freshman, gave today’s Commencement Address. Rev. Donald J. Harrington, C.M., President of St. John’s University, presided over the ceremonies and conferred an Honorary Doctor of Letters Degree upon Hamill, who gave an impassioned speech to the graduates before a crowd of more than 1,200.

A First For St. John’s Acclaimed Mock Trial Team: Three Students Win Individual Awards in One Season
May 03, 2010

Adding new luster to an 18-year tradition of regional and national success, three members of St. John’s Mock Trial Team won top awards for individual performance in the opening round championship series of this season’s National Intercollegiate Mock Trial Tournament.

The honors capped the 16th straight season that St. John’s has earned a bid to the national championship’s opening rounds. In addition to awarding team performance, the American Mock Trial Association recognizes the top-ten students in two categories: performing as attorneys or witnesses.

Games and Rides Equal Fun at 2010 Spring Fling Carnival

Under a brilliant spring sun, students at the Queens campus lined up to enjoy rollercoaster rides, a gigantic Ferris wheel and pink cotton candy at St. John’s annual Spring Fling Carnival.

For four hours on April 23, the St. John’s community gathered on the Great Lawn to take a break from class work. Students, faculty and staff sampled free rides and games — including a giant slide and space war maze — along with Dippin' Dots Ice Cream, popcorn and other treats.

St. John’s University announced today that Pete Hamill, well known journalist and author, and Bob and Suzanne Wright (Co-Founders of Autism Speaks) will receive honorary degrees and serve as this year’s Commencement Speakers at the University’s Staten Island and Queens Graduation Ceremonies on Saturday, May 15 and Sunday, May 16, respectively. Paul J. Evanson, Chairman, President and CEO of Allegheny Energy, Inc., and Most Rev. Guy A. Sansaricq, Auxiliary Bishop and pastor of St. Gregory the Great parish in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, will also receive honorary degrees at the University’s year-end commencement activities in Queens.

Two St. John’s Athletes Capture Individual NCAA Fencing Championships

10 of 12 Red Storm Fencers Named All Americans

Adding to their teams winning tradition, St. John’s sophomores Daryl Homer and Marat Israelian each captured NCAA fencing championships at the NCAA competition on March 28. They are also  among five fencers from St. John’s men’s team to earn All-America status during the final day of competition.

“These wins are the result of consistent hard work,” said Fencing Coach Yury Gelman. “We expected Daryl to win and he did, while Marat played strong and really came through. I’m also proud that the team did very well overall. We went in expecting to be in the top three and took second place.”

Shavone Williams ‘12CPS: Discovering New Worlds Through Global Learning

Growing up in Queens, NY, Shavone Williams ‘12CPS loved her father’s tales about seeing historic European sites while in the Navy.

Today, the 21-year-old St. John’s junior is experiencing those very places through Discover the World Europe, a University program that allows students to earn 15 credits by living and learning in three European countries in one semester. She received extra support to study abroad as one of five St. John’s students to win a competitive Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship.

Jacquelyn Torres ‘10Ed: Empowered Through Service
April 07, 2010

St. John’s University was a perfect fit for Jacquelyn Torres. Passionate about service, she has steadily engaged in volunteer activities that embody the University’s Catholic, Vincentian and Metropolitan mission.

A Childhood Education major, she has worked tirelessly on behalf of her fellow students as a member of Student Government. She also has been a role model by traveling to New Orleans and restoring homes devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Last year, she served as an orientation coordinator. “The first experience students have of St. John’s is through us,” said Jacquelyn. “They should feel our love for the University.”

New D’Angelo Center Becomes Hub of Student Life at Queens Campus

When he has time between classes, Sean Debiase ‘12CPS heads for the Starbucks café at St. John’s University’s magnificent new D’Angelo Center. Then he takes his favorite seat by the fireplace in the Center’s first-floor lounge. “It’s a great way to recharge your batteries,” he says.

Sean always has company. Since its grand opening four months ago, the four-story, 127,000-square-foot D’Angelo Center has become the most popular hub of student life on the Queens campus. Rising above a new quadrangle, the Center’s Tudor styling, arched windows and 144-foot tower echo St. John's original buildings. The brick-and-stone front overlooks benches and pathways where students gather.

She never planned to be an author, but Kristin Johansen ‘13TCB completed a children’s book during a freshman class in Rome, Italy. Diana Capalbo ‘13CPS anticipates seeing her first poetry in print. And Anthony O’Reilly ‘13CPS wrote a short story about traveling in Italy.

St. John’s students this year completed creative writing projects in Rome, Italy, as part of the University’s new Freshman Passport Program. The 67 students were the second group of freshmen in the program, more than doubling the number of the first participants in August 2009.

Red Storm Women’s Basketball Team Headed to National Tournament
March 18, 2010

In a season filled with milestones, St. John’s women’s basketball team has added another, earning an at-large bid to the 2010 NCAA Tournament, AKA “the Big Dance” or “March Madness.” The sixth-seeded team will face Ivy League champion and No. 11 seed Princeton on Saturday, March 20, in Tallahassee, FL, a game to be televised on ESPN2 at 12:21 p.m.

This is the fifth appearance in the NCAA Tournament for the women’s team and Coach Kim Barnes-Arico’s second since coming to St. John’s. Their last appearance was during 2005-06, the first NCAA Tournament appearance in almost 20 years. “We worked extremely hard to get where we are, and we look forward to bringing that intensity to the Big Dance,” said Coach Barnes-Arico.

Apply Now for Summer Course Exploring Ecosystems of Bermuda

Snorkeling, reef-mapping, exploring pristine coves — this summer St. John’s once again offers students a chance to combine studying abroad with the environmental sciences through Discover Bermuda: Adaptive Ecosystem Management, Sustainability and Socioeconomic Issues, one of the many Global Studies courses that St. John’s offers throughout the year.

This popular two-week course is open to all majors, but interested students should apply now since enrollment is limited to 20 students. Frank Cantelmo, Ph.D. , Associate Professor of Biological Sciences and Environmental Studies, will teach the course for the second year. Dr. Cantelmo is an expert on sustainability and serves as an advisor to Archbishop Celestino Migliore, Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations.

Domenica Sabella ‘10G: Graduate Success at Rome Campus Forges Path to Foreign Service

Two years ago, eager to go abroad on her own, the recent college graduate found a job in the press office at the U.S. Embassy in Rome. The experience changed her life in two ways: she decided upon a career in foreign relations, and she realized the right graduate degree was vital.

Domenica chose the Rome campus of St. John’s University as her path to success. “It’s well-known and well-regarded as the only American university in Rome with a graduate program in government and politics,” she explained. “So I did a little research, and it did seem the ideal place to earn my degree.”

Federal Court Internships Vault St. John’s Students into the Legal Vanguard

Fulbright Award Enables St. John’s Professor to Work with Renowned German Mathematician

Pursuing Mathematics as a career was a natural for David Rosenthal, Ph.D. Several family members had preceded him into the field and throughout his childhood he was frequently exposed to their love and enthusiasm for the subject.

Their passion of mathematics is now his too—his face lights up as he discusses topology, his area of expertise—and over the next six months he will be working with leading scholars in the field at the University of Muenster in Germany thanks to a coveted Fulbright Scholar grant.
