’11Ed has just finished her first class. After her daily run, she
heads over to the cafeteria to grab a bite to eat with her
teammates on the University’s Division I women’s cross country
team. Then she’s off to another class before heading home to
prepare for a Dean’s Scholars meeting. Dinner and some schoolwork
and it is now 10 pm.

Opens for St. John’s Students

Christmas carolers, fireworks and the lighting of a 37-foot
Norway spruce tree provided just some of the sights and sounds of
St. John’s 19th annual Winter Carnival. On December 7, 2009, over
1,500 members of the University community, including alumni and
their family members gathered on the Great Lawn of St. John’s
Queens campus to participate in the highlight of the three-day
Winter Carnival – the Christmas tree lighting ceremony.

Coming from a family of college athletes, Courtney never doubted
that her dream would come true. But since she lived in La Grange,
IL, at the time, St. John’s University wasn't yet even a gleam in
her eye. That soon changed. Even before she applied to the
University, Courtney recalled, “Someone from St. John’s Athletics
Department saw me playing in a high school soccer tournament and
wrote to ask if I wanted to play college soccer at St. John’s.”

It had been a dream at St. John’s University since the Queens
campus opened in 1954. In fact, plans for a free-standing church on
the new campus had been included in the original architectural
drawings completed that year. That long-envisioned dream finally
became a reality in 2004, when construction of the awe-inspiring
St. Thomas More Church was completed and the very first Mass—an
Opening School Mass—was celebrated in the magnificent edifice.

Men's Soccer Wins Record Eighth
BIG EAST Tournament With Shootout Win
November 16, 2009
Following a scoreless draw in two overtimes, the St. John’s
men’s soccer team won its record eighth BIG EAST Tournament crown
after defeating Notre Dame in a penalty kick shootout, 5-3. Derby
Carrillo made four saves in the game to lead St. John’s (9-2-9).
Carrillo, who also made one stop in the shootout, earned Most
Outstanding Defensive Player honors and was named to the
All-Tournament team. Andrew Quinn made three saves for Notre Dame
(10-7-4).

With demand for St. John's dynamic global studies programs at an
all-time high, students are urged to apply as soon as possible

So many students have enrolled that St. John's has closed all
semester-long study abroad programs for spring 2010 due
to full capacity at its Rome and Paris campuses. Students
still may apply for spring Freshman Passport classes, featuring two

Leadership Means “Making a
Difference,” Says New President’s Society Member

In her first semester at St. John’s University, Christina
Zaccarelli watched as her roommates did the “St. John’s thing,”
hurrying from one campus activity to another. “I was still a little
worried about getting overwhelmed,” she recalled, “so at first, I
only went to class.”
But Christina was never the type to sit back. In her second
semester, she joined the Intervarsity Christian Fellowship. Soon
she was serving others through Habitat for Humanity, raising funds
for cancer research and leading cheers for St. John’s teams as
chairperson of Red Zone, the School Spirit Committee.

Events Draws Almost 3,000 Visitors to Queens Campus

Braving the threat of an old-fashioned Nor’easter, close to
3,000 high school students, their parents and guests enjoyed their
first taste of college life at St. John’s University’s Fall Open
House at the Queens campus on Saturday, Oct. 17.
Despite cloudy skies, the rains and winds failed to materialize
until after the full slate of activities, which drew 687
prospective students — surpassing last year’s attendance. Parents,
siblings and guests joined the college-bound students for a total
of roughly 2,800 visitors.

John’s as part of the University’s Academic Lecture Series on
October 8 in Belson Stadium. He delivered a heartwarming speech on
faith before a large crowd of students, faculty and fans, who had
the unique opportunity to see the renowned writer live and in
person or via satellite at various locations across the five St.
John’s campuses. The speech was a direct reflection on Albom’s
newest book Have a Little Faith in which he shares a never-ending
need to embrace faith and the security it provides in times of
desperation.

University, Sherwin Cadore listened to strong messages of support
and encouragement from Orientation leaders, faculty, administrators

messages, but wasn’t sure if he believed them.
“I asked myself, ‘How much of this can be real?’” In his time at

Day on Saturday, September 26, with over 1,600 students, faculty,

The newly enhanced TV, Film and Radio Center’s control room now
features a state-of-the-art Evertz® Video Wall Monitor. This new
video wall gives students studying in the various communications

two glass monitors for previewing shows while they are being

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi Sees Daughter
Receive Business Degree from St. John’s University

In a private ceremony held at St. John’s University’s Queens
campus today, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi witnessed
formally the conferral of his daughter Eleonora’s college degree
presented by Rev. Donald J. Harrington, C.M., President of St.
John’s University at St. Thomas More Church.
Prime Minister Berlusconi was in New York for the 64th Session
of the United Nations General Assembly this week and came to the
Queens campus for a tour of his daughter’s university. And, because
Eleonora had completed her undergraduate studies in The Peter J.
Tobin College of Business in August, St. John’s agreed to confer
her degree before her father at this time.

Dean of St. John's University School of Law

At a celebratory program in the Belson Moot Court Room of the
St. John’s University School of Law, presided over by Rev. Donald
J. Harrington, President, and Dr. Julia A. Upton, Provost, Michael
A. Simons was formally installed as the ninth dean of the School of
Law, which was founded in 1925.
During the ceremony, both Fr. Harrington and Dean Simons
described the law school’s origins in downtown Brooklyn when St.
John’s College, as it was then known, was a small inter-city
school, and noted that while its size and stature have greatly
increased, it is still true to the Vincentian spirit which gave
rise to its creation.

Key Senate Subcommittee Approval for $260,000 to Aid St. John’s

Before a crowd of students, faculty and administrators at the
entrance of St. John’s University’s Staten Island Campus, U.S.
Senator Charles E. Schumer announced this past Monday that the
Senate Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development
Appropriations Subcommittee has approved $260,000 to St. John’s
University for a shuttle bus service on Staten Island. The service
will provide a direct path from St. John’s University and Wagner
College to the Staten Island Ferry.

Governor David A. Paterson announced last week that the Board of
the New York State Higher Education Capital Matching Grant Program
(HECap) has awarded more than $58 million in grants to independent
colleges and universities across the State. The funds will support
48 different projects, leverage an additional $484 million in local
investment and are expected to create more than 4,800 construction
jobs and 2,200 related industry jobs.

Program for Over 200 Middle School Students
June 12, 2009
On Saturday May 30, 2009, St. John's University School of Law
was teeming with future lawyers and their families. The Catholic
Middle School Mock Trial Program brought together over 200
students, mostly Seventh and Eighth Graders, to try their hands at
being trial lawyers and witnesses. Twenty-two teams from thirteen
area Catholic grade schools participated. The program was jointly
sponsored by St. Brigid/Our Lady of Hope Regional School in
Westbury, St. John's University School of Law, and the Ronald H.
Brown Center for Civil Rights and Economic Development. This was
the seventh annual program, and the fourth time it has been hosted
by St. John's.

Students enrolled in the Freshman Honors Theology course taught
by Associate Professor Sally Kenel, Ph.D., discovered new meaning
to the phrase “getting your hands dirty.“ As part of their
end-of-semester Academic-Service Learning project, they collected
and recycled unsold textbooks, food and clothing, developed a
carpool initiative, analyzed the efficiency of water usage on
campus, and climbed into several dumpsters to separate recyclable
waste materials (paper, cardboard, bottles and cans) from bins
located behind the Staten Island Campus Center in an effort to
create a “green” campus.

gathered on the Queens campus' Great Lawn to introduce 10 new
hybrid vehicles acquired as a part of the University's commitment
to reduce its carbon footprint. As a participant in New York City's
“Mayoral Challenge for Climate Change for 30 in 10,” St. John's has

The St. John's University Board of Trustees has appointed
Professor Michael A. Simons as Dean of the School of Law effective
July 1, 2009.
Simons, 44, becomes the School of Law's ninth Dean in its
84-year history. He replaces Dean Mary C. Daly who passed away in
November after a successful four-year deanship dating back to
August 2004. Since November 2008, Andrew J. Simons has served as
Acting Dean.

Tuesday, March 17 was a great day for the Irish and the Irish at
heart as more than 200 St. John's University alumni, students,
faculty and staff jauntily marched down Fifth Avenue as part of New
York's 248th Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade. Reflecting the
luck of the Irish, the weather was great for a parade as a bright
sun lifted the spirits of the marchers who represented one of the
world's most respected Catholic universities in one of the world's
most famous parades.

Conference was held yesterday at its Queens Campus before more than
80 local and neighboring college and university professionals. The
one-day seminar, a follow-up to St. John's successful Urban Hazards
Campus Safety Conference last year, featured eight safety experts
who examined best practices for schools that have students studying
abroad.

City Mayor

St. John's students taking a class on leadership had an
unexpected chance to speak with one of America's top leaders – the
Mayor of New York City himself.
The students met Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg while touring City Hall

unique freshman course at St. John's University that uses New York

Laptop Technology to the Class of 2013

Thanks to the University's innovative Academic Computing
Initiative (ACI), which was launched in 2003 to equip every
freshman with a laptop computer, each of the approximately 3,200
first-year students will be receiving a Lenovo ThinkPad X200, an
upgrade of the T61 model distributed to the 2008-09 freshmen class
last September.

During the 2008-09 men's basketball season, more than 2,400 middle
school students and their guardians have attended St. John's
basketball games as part of the National Grid Foundation's “Hoops
for the Stars” program. On Tuesday, Feb. 24, when the St. John's
men's basketball team took on Syracuse, both universities
recognized 20 outstanding middle school students through the Hoops
for the Stars program.

Journalism Professor Mark J. Prendergast has been named Ombudsman
for Stars and Stripes, the government-owned newspaper that reports
independently on and for the U.S. military community around the
world. His three-year term at the newspaper began on January 13,
2009. It's an independent, autonomous position that is devoted to
monitoring the First Amendment rights of the newspaper and its
relationship with the military at all levels.”

Blazer, Inspires St. John's Community

“Something had to be done and the time was right for bold action,”
said Joseph A. McNeil LL.D., an important figure in U.S. civil
rights history who spoke yesterday at St. John's University about
his well documented 1960 sit-in at an F.W. Woolworth lunch counter
in Greensboro, North Carolina that only served “whites.” The
retired Major General in the Air Force Reserves and the Federal
Aviation Administration recounted the mood and volatility of the
times in a poignant speech of hope and inspiration as a featured
guest at the school's 15th Annual Founder's Week Celebration before
a crowd of 200 St. John's students, faculty and administrators in
the University's Little Theatre on the Queens Campus.

On a chilly winter afternoon, the St. John's University community
gathered at St. Thomas More Church on January 26 for the Founder's
Week opening mass and student recognition awards. Very Rev. Michael
J. Carroll, C.M., Superior of the Eastern Province of the
Congregation of the Mission, celebrated the mass and during the
ceremony recognized 240 students who as transformers embodied the
Vincentian values of service, respect and compassion throughout the
year. The students also received a special blessing from St. John's

PARTNERS Program Serves Children,
Parents and Communities Suffering From Trauma-Related
Stress

More than 25 percent of children are exposed to some form of trauma
by their 18th birthday. Ten percent of youth are psychically abused
and approximately one-third of girls and one-ninth of boys
experience some form of sexual assault. A significant amount of
these children will develop post-traumatic stress symptoms and/or
depression.

Book on “Membrane Trafficking”

Biological Sciences co-authored two chapters in a recently
published book, Membrane Trafficking, released in September 2008 by
Humana Press. The book is one volume in the highly acclaimed

Lauren of Seattle, Washington, who enrolled in the Bachelor of
Science in Criminal Justice degree program, credits St. John's
University for her return to school. “After years of juggling both
work and school, I am now able to attend classes at times that are
convenient for my schedule. I don't think I would have been able to
complete my degree and work if I had stayed at my previous
university,” she says.

A new student e-mail system, Microsoft Live@edu, “will make a huge
difference in functionality for our students,” says Maura Woods,
Executive Director of the University's Information Technology
Department.
“The new system provides increased functionality,” according to
Executive Director Woods. “It incorporates HTML, has 10 GB of space
and spam control. Students will be using the new web-based
Outlook,” she continues, “with Office Live tools in addition to a
25 GB virtual hard drive called SkyDrive that will allow for
selective file sharing and e-mail collaboration.”
