Kathryn T. Hutchinson

Kathryn T. Hutchinson, Ph.D., serves as the Vice President for the Division of Student Affairs. Dr. Hutchinson oversees a professional staff in six departments including Career Services, Counseling and Health Services, Multicultural Affairs, Student Conduct, Student Engagement, Student Development, Student Services, and Student Wellness. Dr. Hutchinson leads the Division in the process of strategic planning, assessment, and fiscal preparation and in the management of a major university budget. In addition, she has been appointed to serve on the University Personnel Committee, Co-Chair the President’s Multicultural Advisory Committee, the University’s Executive Planning Committee and the Student Affairs Committee of the Board of Trustees.

Dr. Hutchinson received a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Psychology from the College of St. Benedict and her MA in School Psychology at St. John’s University and earned her Ph.D. in School Psychology from Columbia University. Dr. Hutchinson is a licensed psychologist with over 16 years of experience in senior leadership, teaching, research and clinical work in the university setting. In addition to her administrative role at St. John’s, Dr. Hutchinson also serves as an adjunct faculty member of the Psychology Department in St. John’s College.

Dr. Hutchinson is responsible for the Student Affairs Emergency Response Plan, and presents nationally and internationally on college mental health issues, specializing in training faculty and administrators to recognize and respond to students in distress. Dr. Hutchinson is a regular presenter at conferences sponsored by Homeland Security and OEM, NAFSA, NASPA, and APA.

Dr. Hutchinson has received several state and federal grants for her work on the reduction of high-risk behaviors in college students and the reduction of violence on campus. Most recently, Dr. Hutchinson helped secure a 3-year grant from the Department of Justice to aid in the reduction of sexual assault and sexual violence. She has received numerous awards for her research, leadership, and service and has shared emergency preparedness information during appearances on several media outlets including CBS Evening News, ABC-Eyewitness News, Fox News, and NBC Evening News.
