St. John's Journal of International & Comparative Law Annual Symposium:

The Challenges of International Human Trafficking: Domestic Counter Trafficking Programs

Hosts
St. John’s Center for International and Comparative Law
St. John’s Journal of International and Comparative Law
Center for Labor & Employment Law

International human trafficking—predominantly in the form of sexual exploitation and forced labor—is the twenty-first century’s global slave market.  Yet, despite the mounting data on the existence and human cost of trafficking in persons, many governments remain in denial of trafficking and have failed to create effective counter-trafficking regimes.  This Symposium brings together scholars, government officials, and practicing lawyers for a discussion of their work combatting international human trafficking.  The Symposium, hosted by the St. John’s Center for International & Comparative Law, St. John’s Journal of International & Comparative Law, and St. John’s Center for Labor & Employment Law will address the following topics:

  • Role of lawyers in identifying international human trafficking rings;
  • Compliance challenges facing lawyers working within domestic and international trafficking regulations schemes;
  • The usefulness of corporate codes of conduct and employment contracts in preventing labor trafficking;
  • Effectiveness of government counter-trafficking efforts through an analysis of existing and emerging evaluation practices
  • Nature and scope of the federal programs (Department of Labor, the Department of State, and the U.S. Agency for International Development) in counter-trafficking.
