ST. JOHN'S UNIVERSITY HOSTS SPECIAL
CONCERT UNITING STATEN ISLANDERS IN CELEBRATING
2013 AS YEAR OF ITALIAN CULTURE IN THE UNITED
STATES.
St. John's University has joined forces with
the Riverside Opera Company (ROC) to present Concerto
Primavera, A Tribute to Giuseppe Verdi 1813-2013, a special
concert commemorating 2013: Year of Italian Culture in the United
States. The concert will be held on the University’s Staten Island
Campus at 8 pm on Saturday, May 11, 2013 and will be the borough’s
celebration of Italian heritage and culture by various
organizations in the Italian American community. The concert will
feature a variety of classical music selections by Giuseppe Verdi,
performed by the ROC, as 2013 is also the commemoration of the
bi-centennial of Verdi’s birth.
Throughout 2013 the
Italian government will showcase Italian creativity and culture in
the United States, as the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs
and the Italian
Embassy in
Washington, D.C. are both strongly committed to developing this
initiative in the United States. New facets of Italy in Science and
Technology, Language and Literature, Art, Music and Theater, Cinema
and Photography, Italian Brands, and Food will be highlighted. As
part of this initiative, St. John's University has partnered with
the ROC and Maestro Alan Aurelia to highlight Italian Classical
Music, and the event will be showcasing the works of Verdi as a
celebration of his life and works as one of the greatest Italian
Composers.
In learning of this
event, as with a visit to Staten Island in December 2012, the
Consul General Natalia Quintavalle expressed her pleasure at the
collaboration expressed by such organizations on Staten Island as:
the Casa Belvedere Foundation, the Garibaldi Meucci Museum, the
Italian Culture Center of St. John’s University, National
Organization of Italian American Women, to name a few of the
participating groups. Minister Quintavalle stated: “By hosting one
large event on Staten Island, you help unite all Italian Americans
in a singular and important effort.”
